Flood situation worsens in Nilphamari, Sunamganj

The flood situation in Nilphamari and Sunamganj districts continued to worsen as the Teesta and Surma rivers in the affected areas were flowing above their red marks on Sunday.

In Nilphamari, the Teesta River was flowing 17 cm above the danger level at Dalia Teesta barrage point from the morning due to incessant rain and onrush of water from the upstream, according to Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).

The increased water rendered over 20,000 people marooned in different villages of Char area in Dimpla upazila, the sources said.

The Indian authorities issued a red alert in Jalpaiguri and Koch Behar as the Teesta was flowing 28 cm above the danger level at Gajaldoba in India, they said.

Executive engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) of Dalia point Mostafizur Rahman said they kept all the 44 sluice gates of Teesta barrage open to take the flood situation under control as the India opened the sluice gates of Gojaldoba due to the incessant rain.

In Sunamganj, the Surma River was flowing 89 cm above the danger level at Sunamganj point as of 12 pm on Sunday while 104 mm rainfall was recorded in the district over the last 24 hours from Saturday.

Meanwhile, Class-V student Sharafat Ali, son of Almas Ali of Surma union, went missing in floodwater in Nabinagar area of the district town.
