Prothom Alo English Desk | Update:

ShahanajA Bangladeshi female teacher has been named in the top 50 global teachers short-list for her contribution to girls’ education in the country, reads

Shahanaj Parvin, a teacher of Sherpur Upazila Sadar Model Government Primary School in Bogra district, was included among the 50 finalists for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2017, the biggest award for teachers in the world.

Shahanaj was born to two primary school teachers in a remote village in the district.
The portal mentioned that from an early age she saw how in her society girls were discouraged from receiving education and endured insults from neighbours, as well as economic hardship.

Beginning with a private school that she and some other women started, she threw herself into educating others, later moving on to a state primary school and becoming more qualified.

While many children in Bangladesh have to drop out of school to work, the dropout rate has been vastly reduced by Shahanaj’s teaching methods.

Her education methods emphasise technology and multimedia applications.

Earlier, Shahanaj was also conferred two national awards--the Upazilla Best Teacher in 2010 and Best Female Teacher in 2013.
