Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia has sent a legal notice to prime minister Sheikh Hasina for the latter's 'false statement' about the BNP chief's reported assets abroad.

The notice was sent on Tuesday, her lawyer Mahbub Uddin Khokon confirmed on Wednesday.

"Khaleda Zia has no shopping mall or any other assets abroad unlike what prime minister Sheikh Hasina claimed," he said while talking to journalists in front of Special Judges Court-5 at Alia Madrasa ground in old Dhaka. Khaleda went there to appear before the court.

The lawyer said Hasina's statements on Khaleda Zia's assets defamed the former prime minister.

"If Sheikh Hasina does not withdraw her statement, leagal action will be taken against her," he added.

Mahbub Uddin said the legal notice had asked the prime minister to withdraw her statement within 30 days.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina, at a press conference at her official Ganabhaban residence on 7 December to berief about her Combodia visit, made the allegations that Khaleda had shopping mall in the Middle East.

Sheikh Hasina also said the Khaleda family had 'illegal money' abroad.

In response, the BNP leaders have time and again termed the claim as 'blatant lie' and asked the prime minister to withdraw it.
