Ruling Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said their party will send a legal notice to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia in response to her legal notice to prime minister and AL president Sheikh Hasina.

“A legal notice will be served to them [BNP] as well for sending a baseless legal notice [to Hasina]. Just wait and see,” he said responding to queries from newsmen after a warm clothes distribution programme in Kamalapur in the city.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia had sent a legal notice to Sheikh Hasina on 19 December, demanding an apology for making ‘malicious and defamatory’ remarks about her reported assets abroad.

“The prime minister highlighted the news of corruption committed by the Zia family based on information provided by local and foreign media. The media provided such information. This is proven,” said Quader, also road transport and bridges minister.

The senior AL leader said the premier underscored the truth as she had courage to do so. “This has irked the BNP leadership.”

Obaidul Quader further threatened to sue BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir should he fail to prove his allegations about the infrastructure of the Padma Bridge project.

Mirza Fakhrul, in a press briefing on Thursday, said, Padma Bridge is being built following a “wrong” design.

The bridges minister, Quader, said, “Now Fakhrul is saying that there are errors in the Padma Bridge design. Come forward to prove it. Come up with all evidence and information. You will also have to face a lawsuit if you fail to show evidence of this."
