Ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday claimed AL doesn’t practice dirty-politics, denying having a hand in staying the mayoral by-polls to the Dhaka North City Corporation by High Court.

"Why do you find a hand of the government in everything?" The AL general secretary posed the question at a news briefing when his attention was drawn to the allegation raised by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) that the AL government made it happen.

The news briefing was organised at party president’s office at Dhanmandi 3 in the capital.

Earlier in the day, the High Court (HC) put a moratorium for three months on the mayoral by-elections to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), following two writ petitions.

Country’s main opposition political party BNP, in its instant reaction, said the by-polls have been stayed as the government has anticipated its inevitable defeat in the balloting.

Also road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader said the government has nothing to do here. “AL neither believes in dirty politics nor practices such politics.”

In response to another question whether it would be wise to hold the mayoral by-polls in the capital city ahead of the national elections, Quader said, "It is a matter of election commission. As the court stayed the by-polls, I have nothing to say on it."
