Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday warned the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) that the government will not tolerate any attack on police.

“We won’t tolerate such act in future,” she said, reports UNB.

The prime minister issued the warning after adorning newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary with the IGP rank badge at her official residence, Ganobhaban.

She said the law enforcement agencies have been playing a strong role in maintaining law and order. “Even their members are sacrificing their lives in protecting people’s lives and property.”

Sheikh Hasina also sought cooperation of the country’s people to uproot terrorism, militancy and drug menaces. “We want to root out terrorism, militancy and drugs from the country. We want people’s cooperation to this end,” she said.

The premier said police performed many tough responsibilities in the country so that country’s development continues.

On Tuesday, the BNP men came to the High Court area to express solidarity with party chairperson Khaleda Zia who earlier on the day appeared before a Dhaka court in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

The police claimed that brickbats were thrown on them from the BNP rally when the BNP chief was returning from the Bakshibazar special court.

Police also said BNP leaders and activists then vandalised police vehicles in front of the High Court and snatched two of their activists from prison van.

Four policemen including an additional deputy commissioner of police (ADC) were injured in the attack.

Rebutting the police claim, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Tuesday's attackers on police were outsiders and they were not their party men.
