BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said their party will carry out peaceful and non-violent street campaign demanding the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia, alongside legal battle.

Talking to reporters at Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson's Gulshan office, he also said they are expecting to file an appeal with the High Court against the verdict of the trial court by Sunday or Monday next, reports UNB.

The BNP leader said their chairperson earlier directed them to carry out non-violent and peaceful street campaign in democratic manners for her release, restoration of democracy and forcing government to hold a fair election.

Replying to a questioner, Fakhrul said they still did not get the certified copy of the verdict.

On Thursday, a makeshift court convicted Khaleda and sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

Five other accused in the case, including her exiled son and BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, were sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment each. The court also fined the five accused Tk 2.10 crore each.
