The government has transferred 30 officials from certain departments and institutions of the education ministry to various colleges around the country. The officials are said to have been involved in corruption and irregularities.

The ministry issued a circular in this regard on Thursday. It said more officials will be transferred shortly.

The transferred officials were working at the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE), the Dhaka education board, the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB), and the inspection and audit department.

The ministry took these steps to regain its reputation following question paper leaks of every public exam and the arrest of two ministry officials on allegations of taking bribes and involvement in corruption.

The arrested officials were education minister Nurul Islam Nahid’s personal officer Motaleb and upper division clerk Md Nasiruddin.

According to government rules, no official or employee can be stationed at a certain department for more than three years at a stretch.

On 10 April last year, the education ministry issued separate guidelines saying no BCS general education cadre official can serve at a department or institution for more than three years at a stretch. Besides, no official of a department can be transferred to another department of the same office.

The ministry faced severe criticism for not implementing the rules.

Some of the transferred were working at a certain office for 15-20 years. Some have become professors from lecturers while working in a certain institution. Some were working as lower grade officials even being promoted, just to stay at their current offices.
