Interns at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal went on an indefinite strike from Thursday night following a clash with the relatives of a patient, reports UNB.

The trouble ensued over the death of an expecting-mother.

Mohammad Shakil, husband of the victim, said Khadiza Akhter, 23, a nine-month expecting-mother, was admitted to Bhola Sadar Hospital in the morning as she felt severe labour pain.

Later, doctors at the hospital referred Khadiza to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where she was admitted around 12:00pm and died in the evening.

After her death, Khadiza’s brother Riaz Uddin broke the glass of a door in front of the operation theatre bringing the allegation of doctors’ negligence.

The patient’s relatives then vandalised the operation theatre and assaulted several doctors, alleged doctor Nahid Hasan, general secretary of Intern Doctors’ Association.

Farida Yasmin, an assistant professor at gynaecology department, said the condition of Khadiza was critical when she was admitted as she was an eclampsia patient, and her blood pressure was also high.

Raju Ahmmed, president of the Intern Doctors’ Association, alleged that three intern doctors were injured in the attack by the patient’s relatives.

Later, they enforced the strike demanding their security.
