Nor’wester kills 4, causes huge damage

A nor’wester swept across the country on Friday afternoon, killing at least four people in four districts, injuring dozens and causing a huge damage to the standing crops and houses in several districts.

One person each was killed in Magura, Dinajpur and Pabna in hailstorms and a female college student was killed when an electric poll fell on her in Jessore, reported Prothom Alo local correspondents quoting officials.

Akram Hossain, 45, was killed in the hailstorm in Magura sadar on Friday evening. Magura sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (chief executive officer) Abu Sufian confirmed the news of death.

Locals said that the nor’wester caused a huge damage to houses and standing crops in the district. They said they have never witnessed such devastating hailstorm in their lifetime.

Farmer Syed Ali, 55, was killed in the hailstorm in Dinajpur while many others were injured. The resident doctor of the local hospital, Raihan Ali, said at least 20 people were undergoing treatment at the hospital.

House wife Jamila Begum, 50, was killed in Pabna while she was working in a litchi orchard. A member of the local Union Council, Israil Hossain, confirmed her death.

A college student, Laizu Khatun, 19, was killed in Prembagh village under Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore when an electric poll fell on her. Two others were injured in the incident.
