A young man was killed in what the law enforcement called a gunfight in Wari area of the capital in the early hours of Friday.

Police claimed that the young man, aged around 25 years, was a mugger.

Wari police station sub-inspector (SI) Mizanur Rahman said the man was taking preparation for mugging in Joykali Mandir area near Homeopathy College when a team of police went there to conduct a raid.

Sensing the presence of police, he opened fire at the law enforcement, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight, said the sub-inspector.

According to the police, the man was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after he sustained bullet injuries during the 'gunfight'.

Later, physicians declared him dead around 6:00am at the hospital, the SI added.

Prothom Alo, however, could not verify the police’s version of the incident independently as no account of any witness or family member was available.

The DMCH police outpost sub-inspector Bacchu Mia said the body is kept at the morgue of DMCH for an autopsy.
