The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday alleged that ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) has destroyed the civil administration and law enforcement and is trying to control the media and the judiciary.

The main opposition political party has also alleged that the ruling AL occupied election field of Khulna to snatch people’s mandate in the Khulna city corporation polls to be held on 15 May.

“AL has occupied entire election field on the ground by its police force. They [police] have stood out to be our rival in the election there [Khulna]. Sheikh Hasina has created such a state,” BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul told a discussion and photo exhibition at the party’s Naya Paltan central office.

The Nationalist Research Centre arranged the programme marking the 34th anniversary of Khaleda Zia’s taking of BNP’s leadership.

“Civil administration and law enforcement have been destroyed. The media is being controlled and there is an effort to control the judiciary too.

“They [AL] are making a mockery of elections. Elections have been made a complete farce. The people have already come to know who suspended the Gazipur civic polls,” said Fakhrul.

About the ensuing Khulna city polls, the opposition party leader alleged that the police are detaining their activists every day. “Even those who will be made election agents are being arrested.”

Highlighting several important events of the 34-year political life and struggle of BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, Fakhrul said, “With the completion of 34 years of Khaleda Zia’s political life, I am calling upon the countrymen to forge a national unity.

“Let’s us build up a national unity to defeat this dangerous demon which is looting everything of us. Let’s take a vow to establish people’s rule,” he added.

Alleging that Khaleda was sent to jail “unfairly”, Fakhrul said, “We are calling on all the political parties and the people from all walks of life irrespective of their political ideology to join the movement waged by Khaleda Zia to free the country and to free its democracy.”

Mirza Fakhrul also urged the ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) president and “illegal prime minister” Sheikh Hasina to look at the Malaysian elections, according to UNB news agency.

“I call upon the illegal prime minister [Sheikh Hasina] to look at Malaysia to know that public opinion cannot be resisted even by applying all the strength when a regime indulges in corruption, obliterates democracy and gets isolated from people,” Fakhrul was quoted by UNB news agency to have said.
