State seeks time for Khaleda bail hearing, SC grants

The attorney general appealed to the Supreme Court for holding more arguments on two leave-to-appeal petitions filed challenging BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's bail granted by the High Court, reports UNB.

Following his petition, the SC Appellate Division fixed 11:00am Tuesday next week to hear the arguments.
This Tuesday was earlier set for issuance of an order on the matter of bail of the former prime minister, Khaleda, who has been kept in jail since her conviction in the Zia Orphanage Trust case on 8 February.
The opposition BNP leaders, quoting Khaleda Zia's family members, on Monday alleged that her health condition deteriorated and she could not move her left hand.
Aagainst this backdrop, the apex court granted attorney general Mahbubey Alam time for placing arguments on Khaleda bail.
When the four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by chief justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, sat around 9:50am, the government's highest law officer told the bench that he wanted to place more arguments.
The Supreme Court will deliver its order on the two leave-to-appeal petitions after hearing the arguments.
Earlier on 9 May, a four-member Appellate Division bench, led by the chief justice, fixed Tuesday for delivering the order after closing a two-day hearing on the two petitions.
On 8 May the SC adjourned until 9 May the hearing on the petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission and the state against Khaleda's bail.
On 19 March the Appellate Division stayed Khaleda Zia's bail until 8 May in the graft case in which she was convicted by the lower court.
The Dhaka Special Court-5 of judge Md Akhtaruzzaman convicted the former prime minister and BNP chairperson and sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. She was then taken to old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the city.
She secured four months' bail from the High Court in the case on 12 March.
On 15 March the ACC and the state filed two leave-to-appeal petitions before the Appellate Division challenging Khaleda Zia's bail. Later, the Appellate Division stayed Khaleda Zia's bail until 8 May in the case.
