HC declares Rimjhim Police Town, Italian City projects illegal

The High Court on Monday declared the ‘Rimjhim Police Town’ and ‘Italian City’ housing projects in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj district illegal.

A bench of justice Syed Md Dastagir Hossain and justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order after hearing a rule issued earlier, reports UNB.

Following a writ petition, the High Court on 24 October last year issued the rule asking the authorities concerned to explain in two weeks as to why their inaction to keep the water flow unhindered and protect arable land of Kajla Beel in the upazila should not be declared illegal.

Four locals, including Badshah Miah, filed the petition attaching reports published in different newspapers.

On 23 November, the HC imposed a ban on filling earth in Daricharitaluk, Charitaluk, Pubergaon, Basonda, Paiska, Kuriail, Karotial and Kutubpur Kajla areas of Bholabo union for implementing the housing projects.

Already 700 acres of cropland have been filled up in the name of Rimjhim Police Town and Italian City projects damaging the environment in the area, said advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker, who appeared for the petitioners.
