Production at Shahjalal Fertiliser Factory in Fenchuganj of Sylhet remained suspended for 40 days following an acute gas crisis.

The newly-built factory is incurring a loss of Tk 5 million a day due to the suspension of production, reports UNB.

Officials concerned said they have no idea when the production will resume in the factory.

They said the production in the factory came to a halt on 23 April due to inadequate supply of gas.

“We aren’t getting adequate gas supply from Jalalabad Gas. As a result, the production was suspended on 23 April,” said the factory’s executive engineer Moinul Islam.

The factory produces some 1,450 metric tonnes of fertiliser a day against its daily production capacity of 1,760 metric tonnes.

Moinul Islam said Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) asked them to stop the production following the nagging gas crisis.

“There is a possibility to resume the production after Eid when the demand of gas may decline,” he said.
