Eid being celebrated

The holy Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest religious festival of the Muslims, is being celebrated in the country amid religious fervour, enthusiasm and gaiety after a month-long fasting.

The very auspicious happy occasion began with people offering Eid prayers at mosques, eidgahs and makeshift eidgahs in the morning hours.

The largest Eid congregation was held at Sholakia Eidgah of Kishoreganj district at 10am with lakhs of Muslims offering prayers seeking divine blessings, peace and progress for the country.

In the capital, the main Eid congregation was held at the National Eidgah near the High Court at 8:30am. Khatib of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Prof Maulana M Salahuddin conducted the prayer. President Abdul Hamid joined the congregation.

Besides, five congregations are scheduled to be held at 7am, 8am, 9am, 10am and 11am at the National Mosque.

After the Eid prayers, people from all walks of life embraced each other and exchanged greetings in a spirit of unity, fraternity and equality as enshrined in Islam.

They are now visiting the houses of their relatives, friends and neighbours to greet them.

Meanwhile, responding to the pull of roots, thousands of people left the capital to celebrate the Eid with their near and dear ones at village homes.

The national flag was hoisted atop government and non-government office buildings. The main city streets and road islands were decorated with the national flags and banners inscribed with ‘Eid Mubarak’ in Bangla and Arabic.

Television channels and radio stations are telecasting special programmes.

Special diet are being served in hospitals, jails, government child families, Chotomoni Nibash, centres for persons with disabilities, shelter homes, orphanages, Vagrant Welfare and Destitute Welfare centres.

President Abul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia greeted the people on the occasion.
