Continued floods forecast in Sylhet

Heavy rainfall over the past few days has caused severe flooding in several villages of various districts including northeastern Sylhet.

In Sylhet, several upazilas were inundated due to incessant rainfall for the past three days, leaving several hundred thousand people marooned.

The highest rainfall recorded in Bangladesh during the last 24 hours ending at 09:00 AM on Monday was 80 mm in Sunamganj and Lorergarh of Sylhet, says the Flood summary published on the official website of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of Bangladesh Monday.

The flood summary issued at 9:00am Monday predicted that the existing flood situation in Moulvibazar district might continue improving, while the existing flood situation in Sylhet district might remain steady for the next 24 hours.

The flood bulletin on the website shows, Surma, Kushiyara and Manu rivers were flowing above danger level at six points with places in the country experiencing heavy rainfall.

The FFWC on Monday recorded 80 mm rainfall at Lorergarh in Sylhet, 80mm at Sunamganj, 60mm at Habiganj, 57mm at Kanaighat, 62 at Moheshkhola and 44 mm at Jafflong.

The FFWC also said, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma rivers might continue rising in the next 48 hours while the major rivers of the northeastern region, except the Surma river, might continue to fall in the next 24 hours.
