EC takes 'massive preparation' for fair polls in Gazipur: BSS

The election commission (EC) has taken massive preparation to hold the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls in what state new agency BSS calls "a free, fair and peaceful manner".

Eyes of all those who are interested in Bangladesh politics and elections, will be focussed on the Gaziputy city polls after Khulna City Corporation election were plagued by allegations of rigging and intimidation.

Candidates of Gazipur city polls began formal campaign for the election on Monday (18 June) as voting will be held on 26 June.

Ahead of the polls, the returning officer’s office at Shaheed Bangataz auditorium is seen busy with election activities, reports BSS.

Chief election commissioner, all election commissioners, EC secretary will come to Gazipur Wednesday to meet all candidates and to observe the overall management and law and order situation.

Nezarat deputy collector (NDC) of Gazipur Qudrat E Khuda said the EC authority will sit with law enforcers and administration at deputy commissioner’s meeting office in the morning while later they will meet all mayoral, councilor and reserved women councilor candidates at Bangataz auditorium in the afternoon.

Trainings will be imparted on 9,000 polling officers on 21-22 June while 503 members of law enforcement agencies will receive training on 24 June.

Assistant returning officer Md Tarifuzzaman said proposals have been sent to EC to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) at six centers in GCC polls.

Voting rehearsal will be held with the participation of voters of the areas after finalisation of six centers.

Seven candidates will vie for mayor post while 254 candidates will contest for general councilor posts in 57 wards and 84 women candidates will vie for reserved 19 councilor posts.

There are 1,137,736 eligible voters in the polls.
