Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate in Gazipur mayoral polls Hasan Uddin Sarker on Thursday alleged that nine of his election steering committee members have been detained by police.

In a complaint submitted to the returning officer for the civic polls slated for 26 June , the BNP candidate brought the allegation, according to a press release of the party.

The BNP press release also included the name of the nine detainees.

BNP candidate also alleged that ruling Bangladesh Awami League’s mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam and his activists are breaching electoral code of conducts one after another and destroying level-playing field for a fair balloting.

He said police are conducting raids in the residences of the activists of BNP-led 20-party alliance ostensibly to deter them so that they don’t join the electioneering.

He urged the authorities concerned to immediately take necessary measures to stop harassment of opposition activists for the sake of a free, fair and neutral election.
