The High Court on Wednesday extended until 26 July the bail for the Bangaldesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

A HC bench of justice M Enayetur Rahim and justice Mustafizur Rahman passed the order following a petition for the bail extension by Khaleda.

In the court, lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali and lawyer Abdur Rezzak Khan stood for former prime minister Khaleda Zia while attorney general Mahbubey Alam stood for the state and lawyer Khurshid Alam for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On 8 February 2018, a trial court sentenced Khaleda Zia to five years in jail in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case and sent her to jail. Since then, she has been kept in the abandoned central jail at Nazimuddin Road in Old Dhaka.

On 12 March, BNP chairperson Khaleda got bail for four months following a bail petition.  On 12 July, the HC extended the bail till 19 July, but Khaleda has not been released from jail as she has been shown arrested in several other cases.
