BNP leader detained over party mayor aspirant's rally explosion

The police detained a leader of the opposition BNP early Sunday for bomb attack on a rally of the party's mayoral candidate Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul last week.

Motiur Rahman Mintu, general secretary of the BNP district unit, was picked up by a joint team of Detective Branch of police and Boalia police station, from his house in the city's Ramchandrapur area around 2:30am.

Spokesperson of the Rajshahi Metropolitan police and senior assistant superintendent Ifte Khayer Alam confirmed that Mintu was arrested along with his licensed arms on "specific information and proof".

The police filed a case following boming at the rally of Bulbul on last Tuesday. Three persons including the BNP chairperson's adviser Habibur Rahman Habib were injured in the explosion that occured during the BNP's campaign in Rajshahi city polls.

BNP candidate Bulbul was quoted by UNB to have claimed that the police arrested Mintu for participating in the election campaign. "There was no new case against him," he said.

On 17 July, the rally of BNP candidate came under crude bomb attack in Sagorpara Bottolar mor area around 11am. Later, Sub-inspector Shamim Hossain of Boalia Police Station filed a case accusing eight unnamed people.

The police also arrested a man in connection with the incident.
