BNP’s mayoral candidate complains of harassment

The police in Sylhet has picked up the son of the member secretary of the electioneering committee of the BNP's mayoral candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury, he told a media briefing on Monday.

Rummon Razzak, son of Abdur Razzak, was detained by the police on Sunday night and Abdur Razzak was being intimidated too, alleged the mayor candidate in the upcoming Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) polls.

Ariful Haque Chowdhury, speaking at the press conference at Mita Community Center of Kazitola area, alleged that law enforcers were harassing their leaders and activists and showing biased attitude towards them.

He said that tge police also picked up Sylhet district unit's ex-president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Sayed Ahmed, on Sunday night.

"The houses of party leaders were being raided persistently. They (law enforcers) are intimidating senior leaders like Abdur Razzak and Nasim Hossain", Ariful Haque alleged.

"During his visit in Sylhet, election commissioner Rafiqul Islam assured us that the administration will perform its duty impartially, but in reality we are seeing a different picture," Ariful said.

"A voting with irregularities won't be allowed on the soil of Sylhet. The people of Sylhet would resist any kind of injustice centring the city polls", he warned.

Officer-in-charge of Sahporan police station is trying to violate the harmony, he alleged.

BNP vice-chairman Ruhul Alam Chowdhury, BNP leader Abdul Awal Mintoo, and Mohila Dal president Afroza Abbas were also present there among others.

The election in the Sylhet City Corporation is scheduled to be held 30 July.
