Police have taken legal actions against 113,423 vehicles and collected around Tk 37.8 million as fines in separate drives against traffic rule violators across the country in six days until Friday.

Legal action was also taken against 40,630 drivers for various charges including violation of traffic rules, reports UNB.

A total of 3,544 vehicles were also detained as part of legal actions from Sunday. The drive will be ended today (Saturday).

The special traffic week began across the country from Sunday to reinforce discipline on roads and highways amid the growing student movement over a nine-point demand, mainly for road safety.

Students began the movement after two of their fellows, Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, students of the college section of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin School and College, were killed in a road accident on airport road in the capital on 29 July.

The movement became stronger after the shipping minister Shajahan Khan smilingly compared the road accident with the one in India, which killed 33 people, while talking to newsmen within one hour of the crash.

During the special traffic week, legal steps have been taken against unfit vehicles, drivers without licenses and violation of traffic rules and against pedestrians who do not follow traffic rules.
