Mobile court drive to prevent jaywalking

Police will launch a drive through mobile courts in the city from November 25, aiming to prevent jaywalking and raising awareness among pedestrians over using footbridges and underpasses.

“A three-day campaign will be launched from Saturday to create awareness among people through banners and leaflets and then mobile courts will be launched on the road from Ruposhi Bangla Hotel to Farmgate,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Benzir Ahmed told a press briefing at DMP office on Saturday.

The drives will be conducted to improve the city’s chaotic traffic situation and reduce road accidents. “Pedestrians will be fined Tk 200 or be sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for not using footbridges and underpasses while crossing roads,” he added.

“A large number of people often cross busy roads at Kawranbazar and Farmgate by stopping speedy vehicles raising their hands instead of using the footbridges, which is not only risky but also creates problem in smooth traffic management,” the DMP boss said.
