Annisul to blame shop owners if accident recurs in DNCC market

Staff Correspondent | Update:

Annisul HuqDhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Annisul Huq has said the shop owners of Gulshan's DCC market will be held responsible, should there be any accident again for reopening of the market damaged by the 2 January fire.

He signalled the note of warning while talking to newsmen after visiting the market at Gulshan-1 on Friday afternoon.

In the fire, the makeshift part of the DNCC market got collapsed while the concrete-made part was also damaged.

The shop owners there reopened the market on Friday without complying with the directives of the DNCC mayor.

Annisul earlier said the decision of opening the market would be taken after BUET experts’ opinion in this regard.

The mayor told the newsmen that there is no conflict between the shop owners and the city corporation.

The building of the market seems to be in a good shape, Annisul Huq admitted. But, he said, nobody could confirm if there is any risk.

So, he argued, if any accident recurs after its opening, it is the shop owners themselves who will be held responsible.

The mayor expressed his views that it is better to wait a few days for reopening of the market.

The building market traders’ association president Rizvee said, the market will be kept open from Friday.

As many as 20 per cent shops of the concrete market were affected severely, he added saying, however, 40 per cent of the front side shops endured the fire and these shops were allowed to open Friday.
