Bangladesh's food stock capacity 2.1m tonnes: Minister

Food minister Quamrul Islam today said the country’s food stock capacity has now stood at 2,118,822 tonnes.

“The country’s total food storage capacity now stands at 2,118,822 tonnes with 2,722 food godowns [silos] and seven silos,” he said while replying to a written query from treasury bench member Sukumar Ranjan Gosh of Munshiganj-1 at the Jatiya Sangsad.

In addition to this, he said, a new food godown with a capacity of 1,000 tonnes will be constructed Louhajang Sadar LSD in Munshiganj district under the “New food godowns construction project with a capacity of 1.05 lakh (100,000) tonnes,” he added.

Quamrul further informed the house that the country’s total food stockpile is now 1,218,645 tonnes.

It includes, he said, 124 tonnes of paddy, 952,482 tonnes of rice and 2,66,039 tonnes of wheat.
