BNP fighting against a fascist force: Fakhrul

Staff Correspondent | Update:

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Saturday that the party will fight for Zia’s ideals including democracy till the last drop of the blood.

Addressing a programme in the capital, the party secretary general also said the opposition party will take to the streets again in an opportune time.

“We want to say -- loud and clear -- that we are committed, will fight to the last,” he told the programme organised at Engineers’ Institution, Bangladesh to launch a book on the BNP’s founder and former president Ziaur Rahman.

A pro-BNP civic platform called “Democracy and Development Studies” launched the book styled “Jyotirmay Zia Ebong Kalo Megher Dal” of Abdul Hye Shikder.

Mirza Fakhrul said, “Movement is a matter of strategy. There are ups and downs in politics. We will of course take to streets again in an opportune time.”

The BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, at a meeting with the party's student wing, recently said she would give a call for joining a movement at an opportune moment.

The BNP secretary general said they will fight till the last drop of the blood to restore democracy and to translate Zia’s ideals into reality. “And we will be successful in that fight, In Sha Allah [if Allah wills].”

Addressing the programme before Fakhrul, Gonoshasthaya Kendra trustee Zafrullah Chowdhury criticised the BNP for not taking to streets. “The BNP has committed a mistake by giving all the responsibility upon Khaleda Zia.”

In response to Zafrullah’s criticism, the BNP secretary general said, “We must say one thing that the BNP is a democratic force while we are fighting against a fascist force.”

The BNP leader gave a picture of how many party activists were killed and repressed by the law enforcement men. “In the last one year, over 1,000 activists were killed -- the police shot [them] dead; over 500 activists fell victims of enforce disappearance and several thousand activists were maimed.”

Fakhrul alleged that the Bangladesh Awami League-led government is out to destroy the BNP through inhuman repressive measures by its “fascist force”.

“But, that will never happen. Despite all these, none of the party activists have deviated. Here is the source of power of the BNP as well as Ziaur Rahman.”

The BNP secretary general praised Khaleda's “brave” role and her sacrifice for upholding democracy in the country.
