Women in cinema to be recognised

A two-day long 'Fourth Dhaka International Conference on Women in Cinema 2018' is scheduled to begin at the Gallery of the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka on Saturday.

The conference will continue till 14 January, reports UNB.

The event will be organised by Rainbow Film Society in association with the Women and Gender Studies department of Dhaka University.

It is being held as part of the 16th Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF) which began in Dhaka on Friday.

State minister for information Tarana Halim is expected to inaugurate the conference in the morning. State minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam will be present at the opening ceremony.

Sumita Devi and Raushan Jamil will be honoured in the conference while renowned women filmmaker of the sub-continent Aparna Sen will be the main attraction of this year's programme.

More than 35 women, actors, personalities and filmmakers from home and abroad will attend the event.

Rainbow Film Society is organising the festival and the conference on a regular basis with the theme of 'Better Film, Better Audience and Better Society'.

During the 16th DIFF, 216 films from 64 countries will be screened.

The festival will feature Asian cinema competition, retrospective, Bangladesh panorama, cinema of the world, children's film, women filmmakers, short and independent film sections and spiritual film section.

The organisation has been arranging the festival for the promotion of a healthy cine culture in Bangladesh and in celebrating the global mainstream in film and its social relevance since 1977.

Meanwhile, the 16th Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF) began in Dhaka on Friday with the screening of Turkish film Zer.

Rainbow Film Society organised the festival with the theme 'Better Film, Better Audience and Better Society' in association with the Information, Finance and Foreign ministries.

During the 16th DIFF, 216 films from 64 countries will be screened. The festival will feature Asian cinema competition, retrospective, Bangladesh panorama, cinema of the world, children's film, women filmmakers, short and independent films section and spiritual films section.

A number of female filmmakers, actors and personalities from all over the world will attend 'Fourth Dhaka International Conference on Women in Cinema 2018' organised by Rainbow Film Society in association with the Department of Women and Gender Studies, University of Dhaka. This will be held at the Gallery of the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka (AFD) on 13-14 January.

The '8th Dhaka Cine Workshop' organised by International Film Critics Association of Bangladesh - IFCAB and Pathshala South Asian Media Institute began on 5 January to educate future film activists and it will continue till 20 January.

Films from around the world, Asian films and Children's films will be screened at main auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum (BNM) while Short-Independent films, Spiritual films, Women makers' films and Cinema of the World entries would be screened at Sufia Kamal auditorium of the museum every day at 10:30am, 1pm, 5pm and 7:30pm.

Films from all the mentioned categories along with the Bangladesh Panorama will be screened at Public Library Auditorium almost at the same time.

The remaining Spiritual Films would be screened at Russian Center of Science and Culture at Dhanmondi while the films in the Retrospective category would be screened at AFD, Dhanmondi.
