Rani Sarkar, a national award winning film actress, died of old-age complications at Eden Multicare Hospital in the city early Saturday.

She was 86, said her family.

Rani was buried at Azimpur Graveyard in the city this afternoon.

Rani Sarkar, whose real name was Mossamat Amirun Nessa Khanam, was born at Shonatol village in Shatkhira’s Kaliganj upazila.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Rani Sarkar.

In a condolence message, the prime minister recalled with profound respect the contributions of Rani Sarkar to the country’s film industry, saying that she has taken her place in the hearts of the people through film.

Sheikh Hasina said Rani Sarkar started her career through stage play in 1958 and performed in nearly 250 films. “Her death is an irreparable loss to Bangla film,” she added.

Rani Sarkar's acting career began as a stage performer in 1958. In the same year, Rani got her first break in AJ Kardar’s film ‘Dur Hai Shukh Ka Gao’.

The first Namaz-e-Janaza of Rani Sarker was held at a local mosque in city’s Mohammadpur area.

Later, the body of Rani Sarkar was taken to Channel i office at 2:00pm to pay tribute to the actress. From there, the body was taken to Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) where her second janaza was held, Bangladesh Film Artists’ Association general secretary Zayed Khan said.

In 2016, prime minister Sheikh Hasina provided her with financial support worth Tk 2 million. In the same year, she received life time achievement award for her contribution to the film industry of the country.
