Nor’wester lashes capital

A nor’wester coupled with rain swept the capital on Sunday evening, inundating many areas and uprooting a number of trees.

The storm with a speed of 83 kms per hour started lashing many parts of the city around 6:05pm, said meteorologist at Bangladesh metrological department Muhammad Arif Hossain. “It lasted for around 15 minutes.”

He also said they recorded 5 mm of rainfall in the capital in three hours from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, reports UNB.

The duty officer at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station said the nor’wester uprooted 7-8 trees in different areas, including Manik Mia Avenue and in front of NEC Bhaban, under the police station.

The rainfall also submerged roads in a number of areas, inflicting sufferings on city dwellers.

Meanwhile, rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind and lighting flashed is likely to occur at a few places over Sylhet and Chattogram divisions and at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions with hails at isolated places over the country in the next 24 hours till 6:00pm on Monday.
