Man killed in Rangpur ‘gunfight’

A man was killed in what the police called a gunfight with police at Shukurerhat Velua bridge in Mithapukur upazila early Monday, a day after his arrest, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Rahat, 35, son of late Shahidullah of Bujruk Sontoshpur village of the upazila.
The police claimed that Rahat is a robber. The version of the victim’s family was, however, not available immediately.
Mithapukur police station officer-in-charge of Humayun Kabir said tipped off, a team of police arrested Rahat on Sunday.
According to his statement, the law enforcers along with Rahat conducted a drive in Shukurerhat Velua bridge area to recover arms in the dead of night.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, associates of Rahat opened fire at policemen, forcing them to retaliate that triggered the gunfight.
Rahat was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his associates managed to flee the scene, said the OC.
Sub-inspector Swapan and constable Momin were also injured during the gunfight.
Police recovered one shutter gun and some sharp weapons from the spot, claimed police.
Rahat was wanted in 10 cases filed with the police station, the OC added.
