The Department of Communications, the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism and the Society of Asian Journalists, mourn the death of journalist Syed Shujaat Bukhari.

Founder and editor-in-chief of Rising Kashmir,  Bukhari was gunned down by unidentified assailants in Kashmir on 14 June.

According to a communiqué to former ACFJ fellows and SAJ members, the reputed journalist has been credited with helping professionalise journalism in the region.

News reports say Bukhari was killed by three armed men on motorcycle as he was leaving the Rising Kashmir office in the city of Srinagar.

Bukhari obtained his MA in journalism from the Ateneo de Manila University in 2009 through a fellowship from the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.

At that time, he was a correspondent for The Hindu and reporter for Samachar Post and Kashmir Times.

Bukhari wrote news reports in Kashmiri and Urdu, and headed the biggest and oldest cultural and literary organisation of Kashmir valley, the Adbee Markaz Kamraz.

The communications department, ACFJ and SAJ condole with Bukhari's family and request the Ateneo community to pray for his eternal rest.

A memorial service is being planned in his memory, said the communiqué.
