The first official World Bicycle Day will be celebrated on Sunday in Bangladesh and elsewhere across the globe to create awareness about multiple societal and health benefits of using the bicycle for transport and leisure, reports UNB.

On 12 April 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared 3 June as the World Bicycle Day acknowledging the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation, fostering environmental stewardship and health.

According to the UN, the bicycle is a symbol of sustainable transportation and conveys a positive message to foster sustainable consumption and production, and has a positive impact on climate.

Bangladesh Cycle Lane Bastabayan Parishad (BCLBP) has taken various programmes, including cycle rally and doa and ifar party, at TSC of the Dhaka University to mark the day.

It will bring out a colourful bicycle rally at the Teacher- Student Centre (TSC) at 3:30pm.

President of Bangladesh Volleyball Federation Atiqul Islam will inaugurate that rally.
