Is BCL above law?

The ill attempts to suppress the quota reform movement by the students has reached the most disgraceful level.

Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League are not only attacking the demonstrating students but also assaulting the teachers now.

We strongly condemn the violent attack on DU teachers at the Central Shaheed Minar last Sunday.

The BCL leaders and activists have let their own dignity as students down by abusing and assaulting their teachers. Now the question is if they have such a sense of self-esteem.

Worse, the incident took place at the Central Shaheed Minar, which is on the Dhaka University campus. Yet, the university authorities remained silent about it.

Notably, the university authorities, including the vice chancellor, have turned a blind eye to the BCL men’s vicious actions throughout the entire period of quota reform protest.

The university authorities barred outsiders from entering the campus saying they created obstacles to maintaining discipline on the campus.

Now the question is, the miscreants who attacked the protesters and humiliated teachers at the Central Shaheed Minar on Sunday, are they outsiders?

If they were outsiders, how did they get such opportunity? Are the university authorities doing their job properly to ensure peace and security on the campus? Or they are ensuring a safe haven for BCL to do whatever they like?

Most importantly, BCL activists are carrying out these attacks on students involved in the ongoing quota reform movement in front of the law enforcement.

No legal action has been taken against the attackers till date. The protesting students are being arrested and taken into remand instead, which means BCL men are receiving advantages from the law enforcement while general protesters are being harassed.

Police have arrested 13 protesters till date, but no legal action has been taken against those of the BCL leaders and activists who made violent attacks in public.

A number of pictures of the brutal attack on Rajshahi University student Toriqul went viral on the social media, but the law enforcement agencies are yet to take any legal actions against the attackers although the photos did reveal their identities. Why is that? Are they above the laws of the country?

Awami League’s general secretary and road transports and bridges minister Obaidul Quader said, “There is no committee of BCL right now. No committee has been announced after the conference. I have to make sure if others are taking part in such attacks in the name of Chhatra League.”

Let’s not question whether or not the minister’s statement was honest. Rather we should ask the university authorities and the law enforcement why they don’t take any legal actions against those who are constantly assaulting and carrying out violent attacks on quota reform protesters and teachers. Who are these attackers? How did they go above university rules and the laws of the country?
