Samsung tops smartphone market

South Korean smartphone giant Samsung has retained the top spot in smartphone market in Bangladesh.

This was reflected in a recent report by Bangladesh Mobile Phone Importers Association (BMPIA).

Some 34.4 million units of mobile phones were imported to the country in 2017, according to the report.

As per the BMPIA report, Samsung became the top seller in terms of value, whereas Symphony became the top importer in terms of volume.

Having 26 per cent of the import value in 2017 and 14 per cent in terms of volume, Samsung still has a strong hold on the mobile phone market.

The third position in terms of value and volume belonged to Huawei having 13 per cent value and other rising brands like Xiaomi and Nokia took 4th and 5th places having 4 per cent and 3 per cent value.

A 30 per cent rise in smartphone import was reported in 2017 than the previous year, where 20 brands came with newer models of smartphones.

With the advent of 4G services, the number of smartphones is expected to be increased in 2018, the report said.

This year, a number of brands have envisioned to setup factories in Bangladesh to produce mobile phones locally.
