Khaleda's hearing deferred to 26 Jan

Staff Correspondent | Update:

BNP Chairperson Khaleda ZiaA Dhaka court fixed 26 January for BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's next hearing in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

The BNP chief appeared around 10:45am before the court of justice Abu Ahmed Jamadar of Dhaka Special Judge Court-3, set up on the grounds of Govenment Alia Madrasa in the capital’s Bakshibazar ara, to make a statement defending herself in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

The BNP chief left the court at 1:05 pm.

Khaleda Zia's lawyers asked the court to fix a new date for hearing as they have submitted a plea challenging deposition of the witnesses in  the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

ACC lawyer Mosharraf Hossain Kajal told the court that the proceeding should continue as the accused did not challenge anything in the hearing.

Initially the court fixed 19 January for the hearing.

However, Khaleda Zia's lawyer Sanaullah Miah informed the court that 19 January was Ziaur Rahman's birthday.

BNP would be obliged to the court if it fixed the date on any other day, he said. The court then fixed the next date at 26 January.

The Zia Orphanage Trust graft case against the BNP chief is being conducted in the same court where the recording of a prosecution witness was held today (Thursday). Former Anti-  Corruption Commission director Nur Ahmed's statement was taken in court this morning, after which he was cross-examined by Khaleda Zia's counsels.
