Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal admitted he would have liked to have put goalkeeper Tim Krul in the semi-final penalty shoot-out loss to Argentina on Wednesday.

"I would have done it but I had already used my three substitutes so I couldn't do it," van Gaal.

It would have been a repeat of the Dutch quarter-final victory over Costa Rica when Van Gaal boldly removed goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen for Krul late in extra time.

But Daryl Janmaat had come in for defender Bruno Martins Indi after half-time, Jordy Clasie was substituted for midfielder Nigel de Jong, who was a surprising starter 10 days after tearing a groin muscle, in the 62nd minute and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had taken over for forward Robin van Persie six minutes into extra time.
