BRU to launch Language Institute

A Modern Language Institute will be introduced at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) soon, said BRUR vice-chancellor professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah on Thursday.

“The Language Institute will start working this year,” he said while addressing two separate discussions arranged in observance of the ‘Shaheed Dibosh’ and the International Mother Language Day.

Former vice-chancellor of Northern University Bangladesh professor Shamsul Haque attended a discussion organised by the BRUR administration on the temporary Shaheed Minar premises on the campus.

President of Begum Rokeya University Teachers’ Association (BRUTA) professor Md Gazi Mazharul Anwar read out a keynote paper at another discussion at the gallery room of the mathematics department of the university.

Chaired by professor RM Hafizur Rahman of the mathematics department, the meeting was addressed, among others, by dean of the science faculty professor Md Tazul Islam, dean of the business studies faculty Md Ferdous Rahman and BRUTA general secretary Tabiur Rahman Prodhan.

Marking the day, the university authorities took various programmes like placing of wreaths at the temporary Shaheed Minar, hoisting the national flag at half-mast, wearing black badges and bringing out ‘probhat ferries’ on the campus.

Earlier, vice-chancellor professor Kalimullah along with teachers, students, officials and employees placed a wreath at the temporary Shaheed Minar and observed one minute silence there to pay homage to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement.

Early in the morning, a ‘probaht ferry’ (procession), led by Prof Kalimullah, paraded different streets on the campus and adjoining areas singing ‘Amar Bhayer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February, Ami Ki Bhulite Pari’ and gathered on the premises of the Shaheed Minar.

Deans of different faculties, heads of different departments, provosts of different halls, teachers, students, officials and other staff of the university, and leaders and activists of different students, socio-cultural and other organisations participated in the procession.
