Thousands of job-seekers and students from different educational institutions on Sunday staged demonstrations across the country demanding the existing quota system in public services be reformed.

They demanded only 10 per cent applicants be recruited on the basis of quota, whereas it is now 56 per cent for class-I and class-II jobs, with only 44 per cent getting recruited on merit.

The main procession began from in front of the Dhaka University's central library around 2:00pm and ended at the Shahbagh intersection. Later, they staged a sit-in there.

The demonstrations caused a huge traffic congestion in the area.

The agitating students said they will continue the movement till their demand is met.
