Teachers observe 4-hr strike at JU
A faction of pro-Awami League teachers observed a four-hour strike at Jahangirnagar University on Wednesday protesting the alleged assault on their fellows by another faction loyal to the vice-chancellor, reports UNB.
Around 50 teachers under the banner of "Bangabadhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswasi Progotishil Sikkhak Samaj' observed the token strike from 8 am to 12:00pm locking the main entrance of the administrative building.
The agitating teachers also formed a human chain in front of the administrative building protesting the attack that took place on Tuesday morning.
Amid the strike, JU VC Farzna Islam held a meeting with 200 teachers of different departments at Jahir Raihan Auditorium on the campus around 11:00am.
During the strike, all administrative activities remained suspended but the classes and examinations were held as usual.
Later, at a press conference in New Arts Building around 4:30 pm, Farid Ahmed of Philosophy department announced a seven-day programme, including campaign, among teachers and students.
They would hold a rally wearing black badges on 24 April and observe another two-hour strike on 25 April.
They also demanded resignation of the proctorial team and rejected the investigation committee which was formed on Tuesday, led by Harun-Ur-Rashid, to investigate the assault on the teachers.
Earlier, on Tuesday, anti-VC group teachers, led by university's former VC Shariff Enamul Kabir, observed a daylong strike protesting what they said the violation of act of the university by incumbent VC.
They alleged the vice-chancellor has recently withdrawn provosts of nine halls which is illegal and violation of the university act.
During the strike, eight teachers belonging to pro-ruling Awami League panel were injured in a scuffle at the transport gate.
However, the VC denied all the allegations and urged the protesters to return to classes and keep the university free from session jam.
