A faction of pro-Awami League teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) will stage a token senate assembly on the campus on Saturday in protest against the alleged violation of the university act by vice-chancellor professor Farzana Islam, reports UNB.

Under the banner of Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Bishwasi Progotishil Shikkhak Samaj, the teachers will stage the programme in front of the VC office, said president of the group professor Ajit Kumar Majumder on Thursday.

While addressing a press conference at the seminar room of Mathematical and Physical Sciences faculty, he said they have long been demanding a VC panel election after the registered graduate polls.

But, she did not take any initiative to this end, he said.

According to the university act, an emergency senate assembly has to be held within 21 days after the submission of a memorandum to the VC signed by 30 graduates, professor Ajit Kumar said. But, the VC hasnt yet taken any initiative although we've submitted a memorandum to her in this regard.

He alleged that Prof Farzana Islam recruited deans of different faculties and provosts of dormitories illegally and it is contrary to the university act.

Brushing aside all the allegations, the VC urged all teachers to return from the demonstrations and help the authorities maintain a congenial atmosphere on the campus.

Terming the allegations brought against Prof Farzana Islam false, VC-backed teachers organisation Bangabandhur Adarsher Shikkhak Parishad on Thursday protested at the ongoing demonstrations.
