RU celebrates founding anniversary

The teachers, students and officials of the Rajshahi University (RU) on Friday are celebrating its 65th founding anniversary amid festivity and fanfare on the campus.

Marking the day, the university authorities have chalked out a colourful procession, discussion, tree plantation and rally, reports BSS.

RU vice chancellor professor M Abdus Sobhan inaugurated the day’s programmes around 10:00am releasing balloons, pigeons and hoisting the university flag at half mast in front of the university administrative building.

At that time, the national anthem was sung. After that, the VC planted a tree sapling near the senate building of the university.

Among others, RU pro vice chancellor professor Ananada Kumar Saha, treasurer professor Mostafizur Rahman Al Arif, proctor professor Luthfor Rahman, public relation officer professor Provash Kumar Karmakar and provost of different dormitories were present.

A colourful procession was brought out on the campus around 10:30am and ended in front of senate building after marching different thoroughfares of the university.

All the key buildings of the university were illuminated with colourful lights.

RU marched its journey on 6 July 1953 with only 161 students and 68 teachers in six departments under three faculties.

At present, the university has over 1,231 teachers in 58 departments under nine faculties, along with nine research institutes and 18 residential halls - 11 for male students and 6 for female and Shaheed Mir Abdul Kayyum International Dormitory for international students and researchers with 37,248 regular students.

Professor Itrat Hossain Zuberi was the first VC of the university.
