The Chittagong City Corporation awarded Ekushey Memorial Citation to 11 eminent citizens for their contribution to the fields of social service, education, trade-industries and Liberation War.
The organisation also gave literary award to five people for their works ceremonially at the Muslim Institute premises on Saturday.
Winners of the literary awards are: Moniruzzaman (essay-research), Mayukh Chowdhury (poetry), Siddique Ahmed (world literature), Bishwajit Chowdhury (fictions) and Iqbal Babul (children's literature).
The Ekushey Memorial Award winners are: Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu (posthumous- Liberation War and independence movement), LK Siddiqui (posthumous, social service) Jafrul Islam Chowdhury (social service), Muhammad Sikandar Khan (education), Jane Alam Dovash (posthumous, social service), Shahjada Fouzul Ali Khan (social service), Khalilur Rahman (Trade and industry), Mohammad Kabir Chowdhury (professional), Abdul Jabbar Sawdagar (posthumous, sports organiser), Mohammad Yousuf (journalism) and Moloy Ghosh Dastidar (posthumous, culture).
Chittagong city mayor Mohammad Monzur Alam was chief guest of the award giving ceremony.
In the programme, Premier University vice chancellor Anupam Sen said the city corporation has honoured the dignitaries who contributed to various sectors in the country transcending Chittagong.
Chittagong has a vast treasure of art, culture and literature as an ancient city, he said emphasising, "Bangla is not a weak language. We can conquer the world with it. All the developed nations have been rich nurturing mother language."
