Auto-rickshaws banned on 22 highways

Roads transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Friday said three-wheelers, auto tempos, and other non-mechanical vehicles will be banned on 22 highways of the country to avoid accidents.
The minister made the announcement at his Companyganj residence in Noakhali.
Government earlier issued a gazette notification banning the three-wheelers and other non-mechanical vehicles on the highways.
“Three-wheeler auto-rickshaws, and all non-mechanical vehicles are banned from plying the highways from 1 August to ensure security on the highway,” said the notification.
The 22 highways are following:
National (N) highway-1; from Kanchpur bridge to Madanpur-Comilla-Feni-Chittagong-Ramu (Cox’s Bazar),
N2; from Kanchpur bridge Dhaka to Bhelanagar (Narsingdi)- Bhairab-Sarail-Madhabpur-Mirpur-Sherpur-Sylhet bypass,
N3; Joydebpur intersection-Mymensingh bypass point,
N4; Joydebpur intersection-Tangail-Jamalpur,
N5; Aminbazar bridge Dhaka-Manikganj-Paturia ghat-Khoir Char Ghat-Kashinathpur-Hatikumrul-Bogra bypass-Rangpur bypass-Syedpur bypass-Doshmile (Dinajpur)-Thakurgaon-Panchagarh- Banglabandha,

The minister said there is 2.5 lakh kilometres of national, regional, district and rural roads in the country among which 21,000 kilometres of road is under the roads transport and bridges ministry. There is 3,000 kilometres of national highway under the ministry. The government has banned the three-wheelers from highway to curb road accidents and ensure law and order on the highway. He said that it is to be mentioned that the road accidents are less in these days.
He said bylane will be made for the slow moving vehicles after the highways are developed into four-lanes in future. Plans have already been taken to this end as the prime minister directed.
