Imam recruitment turns violent, man killed in clash
An elderly man was killed and ten others injured in a clash between two groups over recruitment of an imam (Islamic cleric) in a mosque in Sylhet's Gosainpur village under Kanaighat municipality on Friday, according to UNB.
The deceased was Md Ali, 60, of the same village.
Locals said two groups locked into an altercation after Juma prayers over recruitment of an imam at the mosque ahead of the month of Ramadan.
At one stage, the clash became a fierce one that left eleven people injured.
Later, severely injured Ali was rushed to Kanaighat Health Complex where the on-duty physician declared him dead.
On information, police rushed there and brought the situation under control said Abdul Ahad, officer-in-charge of Kanaighat police station.
However, additional forces have been deployed after the clash.
