Teacher jailed for ‘sexually harassing’ schoolgirl
A mobile court here on Saturday sentenced a primary school teacher to three months' imprisonment for reportedly harassing one of his female students sexually in Basupara union of Bagmara upazila.
The convict is Bipul Kumar, son of Hemanta Pramanik of Holudghar village and an assistant teacher of Mohammadpur Govt Primary School in the upazila.
Officer-in-charge of Bagmara police station Ataur Rahman said Bipul harassed the Class-V student sexually when she went to school on Saturday. The victim disclosed the matter to her family after returning home.
Angered family members along with a good number of locals went to the school and confined the teacher to a room after beating him.
On information, police rushed in and tried to rescue the teacher but in vain.
Later, Jakiul Islam, upazila nirbahi officer of Bagmara, went to the spot and sentenced Bipul to three months' imprisonment through conducting a mobile court drive there around 2:00pm.
He also asked the upazila primary education officer to transfer all the teachers of the school and dissolve its managing committee.
There were allegations that such incidents took place at the school several times earlier but the teachers and managing committee members hushed up those.
