Youth killed in BGB ‘gunfight’
A young man was killed in an alleged gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Daulatpur village in Benapole border area in Sharsha upazila of Jessore early Tuesday.
The deceased is Ibrahim Mandal, 30, a resident of Kharidanga village of Sharsha upazila.
BGB-21 Battalion commander Tariqul Hakim said BGB members chased a gang of smugglers while intruding into Bangladesh with smuggled goods. When the smugglers opened fire on BGB men, the BGB retaliated in self-defence, triggering the gunfight. Ibrahim was killed during the gunfight.
Rostom Ali, nephew of Ibrahim, said “My uncle used to run his family by earnings from hiring out the bike. He went out of home with his bike last night, but never returned. Later, in the morning, we came to known BGB has shot him dead.”
The BGB said a firearm, two rounds of bullets and some smuggled saris and clothes were recovered from the spot.
