Alleged gunfights continue, six more killed

Six more suspected drug peddlers were killed in reported gunfights in Feni, Cumilla and Magura districts early Thursday in the latest anti-narcotics drive undertaken by law enforcement.

A total of 55 people were killed in ‘gunfights’ across the country since 12 May, reports news agency UNB.

However, none of the reports of gunfights that reportedly left drug traders dead could be verified independently.

Of Thursday’s deceased, two each were killed in Feni, Cumilla and Magura districts.

In Feni, Samiran Shamim, son of a certain Mohammad Mostafa of Maij village, and Majnu Mia alias Manir, son of one Fatik Mia of Mantala villages in Phulgazi upazila, were killed in a reported gunfight between their cohorts and police in Jammura area around 3:30 am, said Phulgazi police station officer-in-charge Humayun Kabir.

The gunfight took place when police conducted an anti-narcotics drive in the area based on secret information, said the OC.

One firearm, 700 pieces of yaba tablets and 200 bottles of Phensedyl were recovered from the spot, he added.

In Cumilla, two suspected drug pushers were killed in separate incidents of reported gunfights between their cohorts and police in Chauddagram and sadar dakkhin upazilas.

Babul alias Lamba Babul, 35, son of one Hafez Ahmed of Baidderkhil village in the upazila, was killed in the ‘gunfight’ with police in Amanganda Salakanda on Dhaka-Chattogram highway around 1:00am, said Chauddagram police station officer-in-charge Abul Foysal.

Babul was wanted in five cases, the OC added.

In another raid, Rajib, 26, son of one Shah Alam of Changini village in sadar dakkhin upazila was killed in a gun battle with police in Goalmatha of the upazila around 2:15am, said sadar dakkhin police station officer-in-charge Nazrul Islam.

Rajib was wanted in 13 cases, said OC Nazrul.

In Magura, additional superintendent of police in Magura Tariqul Islam said acting on information about gunfight between two drug-peddling gangs over establishing supremacy, a team of police went to Parnanduali housing project in the district town around 1:30am.

The team recovered bullet-hit bodies of two alleged drug peddlers from the spot, he added.

The deceased are Mizanur Rahman Kalu, 42 of Bhayana village and Ayub Ali, 55 of Niznanduali village in sadar upazila.
