Readymade garment (RMG) workers will observe a two-hour hunger strike in front of the office of the minimum wage board for the RMG sector on 31 July to press home their demand for fixing Tk 16,000 as minimum wage.

The decision was taken at a meeting of major RMG workers’ organisations held in the capital on Friday, news agency UNB reports.

As per the decision, the garment workers will start the hunger strike at 11 am in front of the wage board office at Topkhana Road.

At Friday’s meeting, workers’ leaders rejected the minimum wage proposed by the representatives of owners and workers at a meeting of the wage board.
They said that they would go for movement if their demand for Tk 16,000 as minimum wage is not met.

Among others, National Platform to Protect Garment Workers and Industry coordinator Abul Hosain, Bangladesh Garment Workers' Oikaya Parishad convener Mahtab Uddin Shahid, M Delwar Hossain and Jolly Talukder were present at the meeting while Amirul Haq Amin chaired the meeting.
