Man killed in alleged gunfight
A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and members of police in Syedpur village in Haziganj upazila of Chandpur district early Thursday.
Deceased Jakir Hossain, 40, son of one Abdul Latif of Swarna village in the upazila, was a ringleader and wanted in eight robbery related cases, said police.
A team of patrol police found Jakir and his associates taking preparations for robbery in Syedpur village around 2:30am, said Haziganj police station officer-in-charge (OC) Jabedul Islam.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcement, the OC added, the robbers opened fire on policemen that prompted them to take action in self-defence.
A gun-battle took place in the area leaving Jakir injured with bullets, he said.
OC Jabedul Islam also said injured Jakir was taken to the upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead around 4:00am.
Police recovered one pipe-gun and a few locally made weapons from the spot, he added.
